Hello Reader,
Happy almost Fall. As I write this, we are about 36 hours away from the Fall Equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere (Spring in the Southern) on September 22nd at 8:00 pm (EDT).
Since ancient times, humans have tracked the time of equal day and night. The photo above is one I took at Loughcrew in Ireland this summer. Although there is some debate about how this 5,000-year-old cairn (a human-made, cave-like mound) was used, we know it was linked to the Equinoxes.
Twice a year, its opening aligns with the sunrise. As the first rays of the Sun pass through its opening, they illuminate a pictograph of the Sun at the back of the cairn. Although the mound is not currently stable enough to enter, it is clear that the top of this hill was a site of powerful, ancient ritual.
While the solstices often get more attention, perhaps because they feel more dramatic, I encourage you to spend time tomorrow connecting with the energy of equanimity.
If you think of light and dark not as good and bad but as conscious and unconscious - the known and the imagined - how does it feel to hold both in equal measure? What gets illuminated when neither is prioritized?
Spend time reflecting on this liminal space, this threshold of change. Where in your life can you apply this? How does valuing this threshold of change shift how you see it? See if pausing in the in-between, rather than pushing ahead, opens more possibilities for stepping forward.
